  Matthew 14:13-21 (NIV) Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.  14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. A less lengthy approach - "Tell It Slant: A Conversation on the Language of Jesus in His Stories and Prayers" by Eugene Peterson

Unlike other books by Eugene Peterson, each chapter of this book ("Tell It Slant: A Conversation on the Language of Jesus in His Stories and Prayers") is more-or-less self-contained. You can take a long break before returning to this book for the next chapter. Having said that, I still prefer lengthy books written by Eugene (e.g. "Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places")
